How science can be easy and sheer fun

Welcome to the Opposites! A unique social experiment mixing science and comedy into a guaranteed prime time hit format!

Our mission

The opposites is a format by Rob and Joep. We aim to create original television formats that offer science to the widest possible audience.

Our world is more polarised than ever before. We’re diametrically opposed to each other on virtually every issue that matters.

But how different are we really?

In each episode we compare two composing groups and through carefully designed (fun) experiments we learn more about their differences and similarities.

Do religious people show more empathy than atheists? Do youngsters have more stamina than their baby boomer parents? Are beauty queens more vain than regular women?

The results are discussed in a studio by our two hosts, a psychologist and the two opposing groups. Can we give them more insight in themselves and each other?

The opposites: a fun, prime time social experiment increasing the time slot average by 37% (NPO1).

Our format

Some facts that matter

Fascinating new social experiment tv format!

Each episode comparing two opposing groups, like teenagers and their parents, meat eaters and vegetarians, left wing and right wing voters.

Twenty people from ‘both sides of the fence’ undertake a series of crazy, intimate or smart experiments.

The outcomes give unique insights into long-held beliefs and different viewpoints. How to they differ?

The results are discussed in the studio with the show’s two hosts, a psychologist, and the two groups.

Our numbers

Some numbers that matter

In our first series, we scored up to 1,4 million viewers each week on the main channel of the Dutch public broadcasters (NPO1), with a 25% market share in the 20-49 age range. This indicated a 37% increase in time slot average compared to previous months.

In our second series, these numbers were even slightly better. In September 2023, the third series of The Opposites will premiere on NPO1.
